Rogue Hackers take on Scientology

Hello Legare's Bloggers!
Over the past week an online hacker group calling themselves "Anonymous" have been attacking the Church of Scientology in an attempt to shut them down. "Anonymous" has gone so far as to shut down the CoS website, mail letters to all followers world wide, and organized rallies outside the 700 Scientology centers around the globe. Of course, Legare's does not support terrorism, but we do support knowledge. "Anonymous" got quite a bit of media coverage in the beginning of the week, but recently less and less has been leaked. Fortunately, Zach is on top of it, and i will attempt to keep all you Legare's readers posted on the newsbreaks.
The following is a link to a Times article which talks about some issues around Scientology:

These are all the messages that have been leaked to the public, from Anonymous themselves...

This Week's Movie Night Film Is...

So, what's this week's movie?

Uh.. I don't know... GLORIA maybe...

GLORIA? Really GLORIA?

Yeah, that'll be good. Directed by John Travolta and staring Genia Rowlands as the titular GLORIA who goes on a pre- THELMA & LOUISE feminist advancing killing spree. John Cassavettes mostly famous as an actor for playing the husband in ROSEMARY'S BABY but as a director he's an underappreciated genius of American cinema. He's like a home grown, one man french new wave.

This Thursday at 6 pm GLORIA - she's out to beat the mob... at their own game!

1980. color. 123 minutes.

Kopi Luwak in Japan

Regular readers of the Legare's blog might be interested to know that my local coffee shop — Hiro's Coffee — has started carrying Kopi Luwak. They're charging 3,600 yen for 100 grams, which is about $35.00 for about a fifth of a pound. Hiro's is, in fact, a chain, but each outlet has it's own roasting machine and they roast on site. They offer a wide variety of coffees, many of which are fair trade and/or organic coffees. The most interesting thing about Hiro's is that it still operates based on the older model of Japanese coffee shop and it serves no espresso drinks, only vacuum-brewed coffee (it does, however, stock espresso blend).

Thurs 24th of Jan: Legare's Movie Club - Macabe And Mrs. Miller

Dear Sir or Ma'am,

Thursday Legare's Community Resource Center (if you haven't heard of it go to the blog. It's the one you're reading right now) will be screening Robert Altman's classic take of the Western genre: Popeye. Nope, just kidding actually the movie in question is MACABE AND MRS. MILLER. 1971. The film stars Warren Beatty and Julie Christie. Ask your parents.

Q: What's it about?
A: The antics of a mining town. Set in olden times. It was a major influence on THERE WILL BE BLOOD (especially the cinematography) and PT Anderson who called it the best film ever (citation needed).

Q: Is it good?
A: Yes
More Descriptive A: Read this review.

Q: How long is it? Is it in Color? Are there Subtitles?
A: 2 hours. Yes. No.

Q: Why don't you show newer movies?
A: You've already seen 'em.

Q: I'm uncultured. Will it be down to my level?
A: No, it will elevate you to it's level.

Avalon's Low Res Film Festival III Sat. 19th 7pm

Wassuppp ballazzz!!!!!!11 Question Markzzzzz,

This Sat. it's another addition of The Legares Low Resolution Film Festival III or LeLoReFiFe3 for short, or LEGARES LOW RESOLUTION FILM FILM FESTIVAL !!!!!!!!!!!!! for loud.

So bring by your poorly shot amateurish cell phone movies of your tedious, childish escapades and people will feel obligated to take a look at them. It's capital A Art! I've got an amazing entry staring a cup. I call it "A Cup of Joy, An Ocean of Tears" and it's awesome! Although the title's probably longer than than the movie.

This weeks theme is "Don't Force it, it'll come". or DoFoIt,ItCo for short. Please no videos of you on the toilet.

Hey, I just realized something. "Cloverfield" opens this week and it's the first ever low resolution monster movie. It's apt I say, APT!

Hosted by Avalon. Sat 19th, 2008 at 7pm (the one where it's dark) sharp. Only at Legare's.

More Movie Night: Stolen Kisses

So I went to le video store to rent the second in Francis Truffaut's Antoine Dionel series which I thought was "Baise Voles". Turns out that's not the case; there's actually a short called "Antoine et Colette" that is between "Les Quatre Cents Coups" and "Baise Vole". Antoine et Colette" was part of a series of short films about early love called L'Amour à Vingt Ans (Love At Twenty).

So tonight's feature "Baise Voles" ("Stolen Kisses") is actually Antoine Dionel Part III. But I don't think it's in 3-D like most part III's. This follows young Antoine's adventures as a Private Eye, but it's also a love story. Will Antoine be able to solve the mystery of the stolen kisses? I bet Professor Smooches is responsible.

1968 directed by Francis Truffaut 90 minutes color.
